Relationship University

“Learn the relationship skills we should have been taught, but weren’t. – Dr. Becky Whetstone.

Relationships fail because we don’t have the skills to do them right, and it’s not our fault.

The (imaginary) Relationship University is a place where we come to learn, grow, and support one another in a safe community of people who want to be better to themselves and others. The real learning is not in a building; it’s all online. We hope you’ll join us.

Finally, a place to learn about relationships… Dr. Becky Whetstone’s Relationship University.

A learning community of classes, resources, conversation, interaction, connection, and support.

Learn how healthy relationships actually work.

Practical relationship education for real people, real relationships, and real life.
Most of us were never taught how to have a healthy relationship.
We learned by watching our parents, stumbling through our own experiences, getting hurt, making mistakes — and trying to figure things out as we went along.
Relationship University changes that.
Join Dr. Becky Whetstone for ongoing classes and conversations about the things every adult should know about relationships — but almost no one was ever taught.

Don’t wait until things are falling apart to learn about relationship dynamics. You needed to know these things yesterday.

The best defense against depression, anxiety, marriage crisis, separation, divorce, family dysfunction, estrangements, unhealthy friendships, and dealing with co-workers is knowledge. It is the best protection from heartache and heartbreak, and all unhealthy relationships.

What you’ll learn:

Relationship University explores the emotional and relationship skills that affect virtually everything we do with other people.

Self-esteem

Understand the difference between healthy self-worth, toxic shame, and superiority — and why healthy self-esteem begins with understanding that human value is inherent.

Boundaries

Learn about the two kinds of boundaries and how to protect yourself without controlling other people — and how to restrain yourself from invading their emotional or physical boundaries.

Conflict

Understand why couples get stuck in repetitive cycles and what emotionally healthy people do differently when they disagree.

Reality & perception

Learn how your history, beliefs, fears, and insecurities affect the way you interpret what’s happening around you — and why two people can experience the same event completely differently.

Dependency & interdependence

Explore the difference between unhealthy dependence, anti-dependence, and healthy interdependence — being able to need, want, give, receive, and stand on your own two feet.

Marriage & long-term relationships

Learn what makes relationships work, what slowly destroys them, how resentment develops, why people emotionally detach, and what couples can do before a problem becomes a crisis.

Moderation & self-control

Learn how healthy adults balance spontaneity and freedom with responsibility, restraint, and self-control.

Communication

Learn what good communication actually looks like — including listening, speaking honestly, managing defensiveness, and staying out of destructive communication patterns.

And much more.

We’ll talk about attachment, emotional maturity, family-of-origin issues, raising children, stepfamilies, anger and all emotions, trust, resentment, intimacy, divorce, separation, choosing partners, difficult people, dysfunctional patterns, and the psychology behind everyday relationship problems.

Relationship University may be for you if…

  • You want to understand why you do what you do in relationships.
  • You want to understand your spouse without losing yourself.
  • You’re trying to decide what is normal — and what isn’t.
  • You aren’t sure who you are.
  • You want to understand why you do what you do in relationships.
  • You want better boundaries.
  • You want to become a healthier partner.
  • You want to stop repeating patterns from your family.
  • You simply want to get better at relationships.
  • You need to understand what it is to be mentally and emotionally adult, individually and in relationships.

This isn’t couples therapy.
And you don’t have to be in trouble to join.
Relationship University is education.
You can come because your marriage is struggling.
You can come because your relationship is good and you’d like to keep it that way.
You can come because you’re single and want to understand your patterns before your next relationship.
You can come because you’re divorced and want to understand what happened.
Or you can come simply because human relationships fascinate you.
You don’t have to bring or include your partner.
In fact, one person learning to relate differently can change the dynamics of an entire relationship.
